1. What is the difference between an "Artist Proof" and a "regular" limited edition print?

The difference is in the edition size. An artist proof comes in a very small edition size. For most of our Lena Liu prints that size is 50 signed and numbered A/P prints. Most of our regular edition sizes are 3500 S/N or 5500 S/N pieces which means that artist proofs come in quantities that are about 1% of the size of the regular edition. The small edition size of an artist proof guarantees that you will receive a print with a low number (50 or below). This accounts for the higher price of an artist proof, approximately 30% more than the "regular" prints.

However, this is where the differences end. The artist proof print looks exactly like the regular edition print. It is the same physical size and there is no difference in the color or quality of the print itself.

Why do we have them?

Traditionally, artist proofs were developed during a time when the printing process was not as sophisticated as it is today and as a result, the first prints made were usually of higher quality. After many pieces were printed, the colors were not as sharp and true as the prints made earlier in the run. Therefore, the artist would look over the prints, or proof them, for the best quality prints. These would become the artist proofs which were often kept by the artist to display at shows or sell.

2. Do Lena Liu' prints come in different sizes than what's listed in the price list?

No. With limited edition prints, each image is only available in the size originally introduced. Lena Liu prints and canvas transfers are only available in the sizes we have indicated in our price list. Sizes range from 9"x12" up to 24"x30". Popular sizes include 12"x16", 16"x20", 22"x28", and 24"x30".

3. When a print is sold out will you ever get anymore of them?

No. Again, because we are dealing with limited editions, there are only a set number of prints that can be sold. Therefore, once all of the prints in the edition are sold from the publisher, they can only be obtained from a store that deals in Lena Liu's artwork or on the secondary market.

For a list of the Lena Liu prints and canvases that are already sold out please order our catalog or see our sold out list in the internet.

4. How can I go about finding a sold out Lena Liu print?

You will need to do some shopping. First, check with some local art galleries that carry Lena Liu's artwork. You can check our authorized dealer referral page to find the Lena Liu dealer in your area. If they don't have what you're looking for, you will need to consult a secondary market source. That brings us to the next question.

5. What is the secondary market?

These are art dealers that specialize in older, retired pieces and artwork that can no longer be purchased from the publisher or distributor. They keep track of where the pieces have been sold so they can locate them again when a collector is searching for that particular piece. There are various art dealers across the country that work with the secondary market. We suggest calling our distributor, Newmark Publishing, at 1-800-866-5566. You may also search a list of secondary market resources published on the Collectors' Information Bureau website which you can visit from here.

6. Do Lena Liu's prints increase in value?

After the artwork is sold out by the publisher, it will begin to increase in value on the secondary market. The amount of increase is determined by the demand for the artwork and it's availability on the secondary market. The more time that passes after the artwork is sold out, the harder it will be to find it. If the artwork is highly sought after or difficult to find, its value will be higher. Retailers will gradually sell off all of their inventory and there will be fewer and fewer pieces of the artwork available on the market. Combine this with a high demand for a very popular Lena Liu piece, and the market value will soar. This has been the case with many of Lena Liu's prints, in particular, images from the Music Room Series have proven extremely popular and on the secondary market.

7. How can I go about selling my Lena Liu print?

The best way to sell your Lena Liu print is to contact a local art gallery that carries Lena Liu's work. You can check our list of authorized dealers to find one in your area. Some galleries may be willing to keep the artwork in their store and sell it for you for a commission.

Another idea is to place an ad in one of the collector's magazines such as Collectors Mart magazine or Collector Editions, or a local newspaper.

8. What is a canvas transfer?

A canvas transfer looks more like an original oil painting than a print but is much more affordable than a true oil painting would be. Unlike the prints, canvas transfers are framed without glass to show their rich canvas texture. Also, no matting is used around the image. Some frames, like the ones we carry, have a linen liner which gives the painting a matted look and makes it a larger size overall. You can see a picture on this website of the frames we carry. Only certain images are available on canvas. You can see a listing of which images are available as canvas transfers from this website.
